San Antonio Skyline

This is a post about a song named “Si Una Vez”.

It was (apparently) written by AB Quintanilla and originally recorded and performed  by Selena (Quintanilla Gomez)*.

I came to know it from a cover of the song done by a rock band from San Antonio.   This is another great song for learners of Spanish, as there are several great phrases, that are easier to remember because of the emotion that the singers put into their performances of the song.

Performance of the song by Selena:

Performance of the song by rock band “Girl in a Coma”**.

OK, and a performance by a young lady, taking off a little time from work, to perform the song in her office, while she still seemed to have a job. lol

Lyrics and Translation:

I gave you all of my love and more
And you don’t even recognize what is to love

*
Yo me puse dispuesta a tus pies
Y tan solo con desprecio me has pagado
pero ahora ve.

I stood ready at your feet
And only with contempt you have paid me
But look now.

If I once said that I loved you
Today I regret it
If I once said that I loved you,
I don’t know what was I thinking I was crazy.

Si una vez dije que te amaba y que por ti la vida daba
Si una vez dije que te amaba
no lo vuelvo a hacer
Ese error es cosa de ayer.

If I once said that I loved you
And that for you I’d give my life
If I once said that I loved you
I won’t do it again
That mistake is a thing from yesterday.

Yo se que un día tu volverás
Y tu de todo te arrepentirás.

I know that one day you shall return
And that you will regret everything

Yo me puse dispuesta a tus pies
Y tan solo con desprecio me has pagado
pero ahora ve.

I placed myself willingly at your feet
And only with contempt you paid me
But look now.

If I once said that I loved you
Today I regret it
If I once said that I loved you

My suggestion is to listen to this, repeatedly, and record your version, and then listen to that, too.  See Post for Learning with Goldwave, on this blogsite (this one, expanolahora.com)

Invitando a Oradores

Espanolahora.com and espanolahora Meetup requests speakers for our weekly meeting. The only requirements are to speak Spanish, and to make a presentation and then take questions for about thirty minutes total. You can talk about anything that you would like, anything of interest to you, whatever you would like to tell. It could be, of course, about your business, sales, products, services, etc. It could be about your trips to Latin America. Other subjects are your history, the people you work with, present projects, how you came to where you are in business, profession, hobbies, art, talent, etc.

The advantage for the speaker is that they can meet 10 to 20 people in a relaxed, low pressure environment. This may be good for passing out business cards, practicing other sales and meeting presentations, making new friends.

If you would be interested in making this kind of presentation, please email to espanolmeetup@gmail.com or call David Bosworth at 210-805-0502 or 210-805-9334.

Also, if you are simply interested in speaking and understanding Spanish, please visit this website at http://www.meetup.com/EspanolAhora-Spanish-Now/events/226431679/ and visit with us at some meeting.

Calling on politicos to make short presentations in spanish.

We’re all excited about the presidential primary in 2016, and the impact that Texas and Hispanics might have upon the outcomes. While the future may have emotional arguments, and grand stages, we are looking for a few local campaign supporters that would like to have a friendly chat, in spanish, regarding the work they may be doing in preparing the local segment of the national campaign, how they decided to work in politics, and why they are doing this during the next year. Past adventures and interesting stories are always welcome.

This should be a low key presentation, may be an opportunity to ask 10-20 people what they think (in Spanish), and even a good first exercise for campaign workers who are putting together introductions and presentations.

Our meetings are between 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., we usually ask our speakers to speak between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m., with about 15 minutes for presentation, and 15 minutes question and answer (but it’s always flexible).

More information is at http://www.meetup.com/EspanolAhora-Spanish-Now/events/226431679/

By the way, if you want to simply sit in and hone your conversational skills, please come by any time between 5:30 and 7:00 pm.
Call me if you have any questions, David at 210-805-9334 or 210-805-0502.

Using Goldwave for practice on languages

These days, and in the recent decades,  we have been able to find recorded books on CD, make downloads to the computer,  and use software like Goldwave (at goldwave.com) to manipulate these recordings to our advantage for learning languages, and to make recordings for this purpose as well.

There are probably other software programs as well, check them out.  Goldwave can be downloaded on a trial basis for free.  If it meets your needs, you can buy a license.  They continue to upgrade the program, so they are spending the license money on R&D.

I took a short look at Audacity.  One concern was that it had trouble opening the file, saying it was a Windows media file, and it could not be opened on Audacity.  I went to some other music CD’s that clearly came off CD’s (not burned discs), and they opened just fine.  They may have been recorded by Realplayer and not WMP.  Anyway, otherwise it seemed that Audacity had some of the same controls, I just haven’t learned to run them.

On Goldwave, you can slow the speed of the  recording down.  First of all, save it, I call it xxx-10 or -20, and save it at a playback rate (the little Hz button) of either 40000 or 36000.  It will save the recording at that slower rate.  You can make the program repeat.

xxxx Still writing this.

As much as possible, think in the language.
